I already wrote a post addressing my personal opinions on the new year and my resolution, however after being contacted by the lovely people of Bonobos, I decided to write a post addressing my fashion related New Years resolutions/ a compilation of trends I’ll be following this year.
Below is a list of the biggest trends I think will be in stores for Spring/Summer 2017. I think I’m going to translate this list into a YouTube video in the next week complete with examples of how I’d style each trend, so stay on the lookout for that!
Also referred to as banker stripes, these are going to be taking over stores this spring and summer. The most popular version will be thin blue and white vertical stripes on trendy off the shoulder pieces. Beautiful button ups giving a nod to menswear and flowy shorts will be covered in this print as well. See it paired with embroidery. Light and airy fabrics, you will also see it in horizontal stripes with color and width variations.
Floral in pastel and sorbet shades, tiny polka dots and cute little fruits will be sprinkled through stores. Small prints are super cute and easy to pair with other styles. Floral was seen all over the runways which seemed to lack some originality for spring but new color schemes and styles will hopefully bring a breath of fresh air into the trend.
Thats So 70s!
90s ruled spring/summer 2016 with light washed denim, laid back tees, and Adidas sneakers. While those simple staple sales aren’t going anywhere soon, SS17 brings us even further into the past with a huge 70s revival. Fringe fanatics get ready to see this embellishment in leather, suede and cloth. I can imagine long fringe belts trailing through festival season. Bellbottoms and flares have been working their way into the scene since 2014 and will definitely continue. Circular glasses, both prescription and sunglasses, too. Besides fringe, or perhaps even paired with fringe there will also be a tone of crotchet and lace to show off layered bralettes and bra styled shirts. Over these bralette inspired tops I can imagine what they are calling the “bathrobe” styled trench coat, or a longer coat or sweater made of light weight materiel.
Ruffles + Statement Sleeves
After a winter ruled by “the cold shoulder” trend, its only natural that the spring and summer will be all about sleeves and details. Expect dramatic flare sleeves, tiered sleeves, and more. Structured looks, influenced from the linear prints are leading to a lot of ruffles across the chest, complementing the hemline of the off-the-shoulder trend, and adorning the bottom of shorts and shirts. Even the one shoulder look is being pushed by numerous designers going for a modern take on a classic button down.
If you haven’t already seen this trend taking over the end of our winter season then you must not get out much. From roses and monarch butterflies to more extravagant hand embroidery this is everywhere from Gucci shoes to Forever 21 bomber jackets. Another take on it is to have embroidered patches, seen on a lot of denim. At a recent trade show bold colored roses were seen embroidered on striped pattern dresses showing adventurous looks becoming mainstream.
Chokers will continue to rule the scene however jewelry is taking it to the next level this year. Expect to see a number of girls on vacation rocking one pieces with necklaces and body chains. I can imagine these chains making themselves to night clubs, music festivals and concerts as well. Double earrings or earrings that connect from a cartilage piercing to a lobe piercing fall under this category too. Chain styled bralettes and sequined bralettes give nod to this trend. For the less risky person, body chains such as a ring that links to a bracelet or an anklet that links to a toe ring will be flashed around.
Although completely over worn, sneakers like Adidas will definitely stick around as a staple shoe for 2017 because they’re easy and comfortable. Other sneakers like crips Nike Air Max’s will also populate the sneaker head scene. Besides the norm its being predicted that 2017 will be the year of the platform shoe. From the revival of creepers (popular in 2012-2013) to platform sneakers, sandals, slip ons and more. The preppy shoe style of oxfords, in platform and flat style is also on the rise. Just like how preppy button downs are being reinvented, so is the oxford. They are coming in various colors with wooden and rubber treaded soles. One motif that is especially interesting to see on the rise is stars. Another shoe favorite which started last summer will be lace up Aztec sandals complete with beads, pom poms and stitching. Finally, in the shoe department slip ons/slides are being vamped up into the classy open toe mule.
